Beauty Career Myth Buster: True or False

Think you know what it takes to succeed in the beauty industry? There are countless beauty career myths and misconceptions about beauty school and careers in cosmetology and esthetics. At The Salon Professional Academy (TSPA) in Evansville, we’re here to set the record straight with a fun game that will test your knowledge and show you what this industry is really about.

Myth #1: Beauty School is Just About Cutting Hair.

True or False?

While hair cutting and coloring are big parts of cosmetology, a professional cosmetology program like ours covers so much more, including makeup artistry and nail design, skincare, and professional business skills. You’ll learn how to create total transformations, not just great haircuts.

Myth #2: You Need a 4-Year Degree to Make Good Money in Beauty.

True or False?

The beauty industry is full of opportunities for motivated and skilled professionals. With a state license and hands-on training, many beauty pros launch successful careers in less than 2 years. Whether you dream of becoming a stylist or aesthetician, your earning potential depends more on your skills and business savvy than a college degree.

Myth #3: Esthetics is Only About Facials.

True or False?

Facials are just the beginning! Estheticians are trained in advanced skincare treatments like chemical peels, microdermabrasion, waxing, makeup artistry, eyelash extensions, and more. Esthetics is about helping clients look and feel their best while staying ahead of skincare trends.

Myth #4: Makeup Artists Only Work in Salons.

True or False?

Makeup artistry opens the door to so many exciting careers, from working with brides and special events to TV, film, fashion shows, or even starting your own freelance business. Many beauty pros combine their cosmetology or aesthetics training with makeup to build a versatile and high-demand skill set.

Myth #5: Beauty School is Easy.

True or False?

While beauty school is exciting and creative, it’s also fast-paced, hands-on, and requires hard work and dedication. Students learn technical skills, business strategies, and guest service techniques, all while gaining real-world experience in a salon or spa environment.

Myth #6: The Beauty Industry Isn’t Stable.

True or False?

The beauty industry is one of the most resilient and ever-growing career fields. People will always want to look and feel their best, which means skilled beauty professionals are always in demand. Plus, trends and new techniques keep things fresh and exciting!

Myth #7: You Can’t Be Creative and Make a Good Living.

True or False?

Beauty careers are built on creativity and a spirit of entrepreneurship. Whether you become a stylist, aesthetician, or salon owner, your income can grow with your expertise, client base, and specialty services. Many beauty professionals earn impressive incomes while doing what they love.

Myth #8: Beauty Careers Are Only for Women.

True or False?

The beauty and wellness industry is for everyone. More men than ever are pursuing careers in barbering, skincare, and salon ownership. Creativity, skill, and passion, not gender, determine your success.

Myth #9: You Can’t Advance in Beauty Careers.

True or False?

Beauty professionals can advance to become educators, platform artists, brand ambassadors, or even salon and spa owners. The industry is full of leadership and business opportunities for those who want to grow.

Myth #10: Beauty School is Only for Young People.

True or False?

There’s no “perfect age” to start a beauty career. Whether you’re 18 or 40, if you’re passionate about beauty, you can thrive. Many students begin their training as a second career and find incredible success.

How to Stay Ahead of Beauty Trends as a Beauty School Student | TSPA Evansville

How to Stay Ahead of Beauty Trends: Tips for Aspiring Beauty Pros

The beauty industry is always on the move. What’s hot today might be old news tomorrow! If you’re an aspiring cosmetologist or esthetician at The Salon Professional Academy in Evansville, staying ahead of the curve isn’t just fun; it’s essential for your future career.

Here’s how you can keep your finger on the pulse of the latest beauty trends and stand out as a trend-savvy pro.

Make Social Media Your Trend Radar

Platforms like TikTok and Instagram are where beauty trends are born and go viral. Follow top beauty creators, brands, and industry insiders. Engage with the content you love, and your feed will quickly fill with the freshest ideas, tutorials, and product launches. Don’t forget to share your work and join trending challenges to boost your visibility!

Read Professional Blogs & Industry Publications

Leading beauty brands and professional sites regularly publish blogs and articles about what’s trending. These resources offer deeper insights than what you’ll find on social media, including expert interviews, product reviews, and technique breakdowns. Make it a habit to check in weekly for inspiration and education.

Attend Industry Events and Networking Opportunities

Beauty conferences, trade shows, and local networking events are gold mines for trend spotting. You’ll see new products firsthand, attend workshops, and connect with other passionate professionals. These events often feature trend forecasts and live demos, plus they’re a fantastic way to build your professional network.

Embrace Lifelong Learning

Trends move fast, but the fundamentals of beauty never go out of style. Take advanced classes, watch online tutorials, and seek out continuing education opportunities to further your skills. The more you know, the easier it is to adapt classic techniques to the latest looks.

Watch What’s Happening in the Industry

Pay attention to major shifts shaping the beauty world in 2025 and beyond:

  • AI & Personalization: AI-driven technology is revolutionizing product recommendations, virtual try-ons, and skincare routines. Stay curious about new tech tools you can use in your future salon.
  • Sustainability and Clean Beauty: Clients are seeking eco-friendly, clean, and ethically sourced products. Learn about sustainable brands and practices to offer informed recommendations.
  • Inclusivity: Beauty is for everyone! Trends now celebrate individuality, diversity, and self-expression. Keep an open mind and embrace techniques and products for all hair and skin types.
  • Minimalism & “Skinimalism”: Simple, effective routines and multi-use products are in. Clients want results without the clutter; learn how to deliver maximum impact with minimal steps.

Experiment and Make It Your Own

Trends are a starting point, not a rulebook. Try new techniques on mannequin heads or friends, and don’t be afraid to put your own spin on what’s hot. The best beauty pros are trendsetters, not just followers!

Stay Curious and Adaptable

The beauty industry thrives on change. Stay curious, keep learning, and be prepared to pivot when something new emerges. Your adaptability will make you a valuable asset in any salon.

At The Salon Professional Academy in Evansville, we teach you more than just skills; we help you develop the mindset to stay ahead in a fast-moving industry. With our Redken-affiliated curriculum, hands-on training, and strong industry connections, you’ll graduate ready to spot (and set) the next big trend.

How to Balance School, Work, and Your Personal Life: Tips for Beauty School Students

Are you dreaming of a career in beauty but feeling a little overwhelmed by the thought of juggling classes, a job, and your social life? You’re not alone! At The Salon Professional Academy in Evansville, we know our students are go-getters. Many of you are working part-time, building your skills, and still making time for friends and family. It’s a lot, but with the right strategies, you can absolutely thrive. Here’s how to keep your life in balance while you train for your dream career!

Get Organized (Your Planner Is Your BFF!)

Whether you prefer a classic paper planner or a calendar app, keeping track of your schedule is essential. Block out your class times, work shifts, study sessions, and, yes, downtime! Seeing everything in one place helps you avoid double-booking and makes it easier to say “yes” (or “no”) to new commitments.

Pro tip: Color-code your calendar for school, work, and personal time. It’s visually satisfying and super helpful!

Prioritize Like a Pro

Not all tasks are created equal. When you have a big exam coming up or a busy week at work, it’s okay to let some things slide. Make a daily to-do list and highlight your top three priorities. Focus on those first, and don’t stress if you can’t do it all.

Communicate with Your Support System

Let your family, friends, and employer know about your school schedule and goals. Most people want to support you; they just need to know how! Whether it’s swapping a work shift or asking for a quiet night to study, open communication makes a world of difference.

Take Care of Yourself

It’s tempting to power through on coffee and adrenaline, but self-care isn’t optional; it’s essential! Eat nourishing meals, get enough sleep, and make time for activities that recharge you (think: a walk, a face mask, or a Netflix night).

Make Time for Fun (Seriously!)

All work and no play? Not here! Celebrating your wins, big or small, keeps you motivated. Plan a night out with friends, join a student club, or treat yourself to a new beauty product. You deserve it!

Lean on Your TSPA Family

At The Salon Professional Academy, you’re never alone. Our instructors, staff, and fellow students are here to cheer you on, lend a hand, or just listen when things get tough. Don’t be afraid to ask for help or share your struggles. We’re all in this together!

Remember Your “Why”

When things get hectic, remind yourself why you started this journey. Picture yourself behind the chair, creating confidence and beauty, or running your own salon. That vision will help you push through the tough days and keep your eyes on the prize.

Ready to Start Your Journey?

Master the Lingo: Essential Beauty Industry Terms Every New Salon Pro Should Know

Stepping into the beauty industry is like learning a new language filled with balayage, keratin treatments, and microdermabrasion. Whether you’re a fresh graduate from The Salon Professional Academy (TSPA) or just starting your journey, knowing these terms will help you communicate like a pro, impress clients, and build confidence in your craft. Let’s decode the jargon!

Hair Care & Styling

  • Balayage – A French highlighting technique where color is hand-painted onto sections of hair for a sun-kissed, natural look. Unlike traditional foils, balayage creates soft, blended contrasts.
  • Toner – A product that neutralizes unwanted brassy or yellow tones in blonde hair after bleaching. It’s the secret to achieving icy platinum or cool ash shades.
  • Redken Acidic Bonding Concentrate – A bond-building treatment that repairs broken disulfide bonds in hair damaged by chemical services. A must-have for clients with color-treated or fragile hair.
  • Undercut – A bold haircut where the sides and back are shaved or closely clipped, contrasting with longer hair on top. Popular in edgy, modern styles.
  • Blowout – A professional blow-dry service that transforms hair into smooth, voluminous styles. Clients love it for events or as a weekly treat.

Skincare & Esthetics

  • Chemical Peel – A treatment using acids (like glycolic or salicylic) to exfoliate the skin’s surface, reducing acne, hyperpigmentation, and fine lines.
  • Microdermabrasion – A non-invasive exfoliation method that uses tiny crystals or a diamond tip to buff away dead skin cells, revealing a brighter complexion.
  • Retinoids – Vitamin A derivatives (e.g., retinol) that boost collagen production and cell turnover. A gold standard in anti-aging skincare.
  • Sebum – The natural oil produced by sebaceous glands. Excess sebum can lead to oily skin or acne, while too little causes dryness.
  • LED Light Therapy – A treatment using specific wavelengths to target acne (blue light) or stimulate collagen (red light).

Nail Services

  • Gel vs. Acrylic – Gel: Polish cured under UV/LED light for a glossy, chip-free finish. Acrylic: A mix of liquid monomer and powder polymer that creates durable extensions.
  • Dip Powder – A manicure where nails are dipped into colored powder and sealed with resin. It is known for its long-lasting wear without UV light.
  • Russian Manicure – A precise, dry technique using electric files to cuticle work, popular for its clean, natural look.
  • Nail Primer – A product applied before acrylics or gels to improve adhesion and prevent lifting.
  • E-File – An electric file used to shape artificial nails and remove product. Mastery prevents over-filing and damage.

Business & Client Care

  • Client Retention – Strategies to keep clients returning, like personalized consultations, loyalty programs, and follow-up reminders.
  • Patch Test – A small skin test done 24–48 hours before treatments to check for allergic reactions.
  • Upselling – Recommending add-ons (e.g., a deep-conditioning mask after a haircut) to enhance services and boost revenue.
  • No-Show Policy – A rule charging fees for missed appointments. Protects your time and income – 67% of salons enforce one.
  • Backbar – Professional products used in-salon but not sold retail

Why This Matters at TSPA

At The Salon Professional Academy, you’ll master these terms hands-on – whether practicing balayage on mannequins, performing microdermabrasion in our student salon training area, or role-playing client consultations. Our curriculum blends technical skills with business savvy, ensuring you graduate ready to thrive in salons, spas, or your own chair.

’90s Beauty is Back—Here’s How to Rock It This Spring

90's Beauty is Back

Spring 2025 is giving major throwback vibes—and we’re so here for it. The beauty world is digging into its ‘90s vault, and what’s popping out? Glossy lips, face-framing layers, and a whole lot of attitude. At The Salon Professional Academy, we’re breaking down how to bring these iconic trends into your modern-day routine—without looking like you time-traveled.

Hair’s Having a Moment

Voluminous Loose Curls
Think Cindy Crawford meets TikTok glam. Big, bouncy blowouts are back, and they’re bringing the drama (in a good way). Grab your round brush, whip out the volumizing mousse, and get that lift. Fine hair? Clip-in extensions = instant ‘90s supermodel energy.

Face-Framing Layers

The haircut that flatters literally everyone. Layers that hug your face are not just cute—they add texture, volume, and movement. Basically, it’s the “I woke up like this” of hairstyles.

Half-Up Half-Down Vibes

Whether you’re brunching or bossing up at work, the half-up style is a go-to. Leave a few wispy pieces out front for that effortless, cool-girl feel.

💧 Skincare That Glows

’90s skin was all about that lit-from-within glow, and we’re loving the comeback. To get that radiant, “my skin but better” look, try:

  • Hydrating primers (your base’s BFF)
  • Serum foundations for lightweight coverage
  • Skin tints that let your real skin shine through

It’s skincare-meets-makeup magic.

💄 Makeup is Getting Its Groove Back

Glossy Brown Lips

The OG brown lip is back—and better than ever. Here’s how to get the look:

  1. Outline with a deep brown liner
  2. Swipe on a nude or caramel gloss
  3. Top it off with clear gloss for extra shine

It’s giving “main character” energy.

Thinner, Sleek Brows

Don’t panic—we’re not talking ultra-thin 1999 brows. Think slightly slimmer, softly arched, and super clean. Less is more, but the impact is major.

Frosted Eyeshadow

Frosted lids? Yes please. Shades like icy blue, lavender shimmer, and glowy white are taking center stage. Today’s formulas are smoother, creamier, and way more wearable.

💅 Nails & Accessories: The Finishing Touch

Oversized Hair Accessories

Go big or go home, right? Chunky headbands, claw clips, and bold barrettes are the perfect throwback detail for ponytails, waves, or messy buns.

Grunge-Inspired Nails

Dark polish + edgy designs = total mood. Think black, burgundy, deep green, or even plaid accents.

Want to learn how to master these iconic looks IRL? Stay tuned for more updates and behind-the-scenes peeks into our classes. Follow us on social media to stay inspired and join the conversation. Let’s get this throwback party started!

It’s a full vibe—and your clients will love it.

A beauty education that includes wellness? That opens up a ton of doors. You could:

  • Work in luxury spas that focus on full-body wellness
  • Launch your own beauty + wellness brand or boutique salon
