The History of Cosmetology School: A Look Back

At The Salon Professional Academy (TSPA), we understand the importance of education and training in the cosmetology industry. As an industry that has been around for centuries, cosmetology’s rich history has shaped how we view beauty today.

The Early Days

During the 16th century, cosmetology began gaining prominence in France. Women began using complex hairstyles and makeup to showcase their social status, and the demand for beauty services increased. This led to the creation of the first cosmetology schools in France, where salons began teaching their techniques to apprentices.

The Rise of Beauty Culture

The beauty industry began to thrive in the United States during the 1920s and 1930s, with Hollywood films and the rise of beauty culture. As a result, cosmetology schools began to pop up across the country, offering training in hairdressing, makeup, and other beauty services.

The Modern-Day Industry

Today, cosmetology schools are an essential part of the beauty industry. Most schools, including TSPA, are accredited by the National Accrediting Commission of Career Arts and Sciences (NACCAS) and offer programs ranging from a few months to two years. With comprehensive training in a wide variety of beauty services, graduates can enter into a variety of careers, from hair stylist to makeup artist, esthetician to nail technician, and more.

The Benefits of Cosmetology School

Attending TSPA can provide aspiring beauty professionals with not only the knowledge and skills but also the confidence and expertise they need to succeed in the industry. Graduates may open their salons and businesses and ride the ever-changing emerging trends and techniques.

A Look to the Future

As the cosmetology industry continues to evolve, TSPA keeps up with the latest trends and techniques, providing students with the most up-to-date training and education. Additionally, as eco-friendly and sustainable beauty becomes more popular, TSPA also allows students to learn and practice these innovative beauty practices.

The history of cosmetology school is a rich and fascinating one. At TSPA, we strive to continue to shape the industry’s future by staying up-to-date with advances in the industry and producing graduates who hold the highest standard of excellence.

Exciting Beauty Careers For Beauty Lovers!

“Why are you studying to be a hairdresser”? Most of our students have been asked this question by one person or another when they choose to pursue their beauty careers.

The truth is, being a hairdresser is a worthwhile profession. It can be a lucrative one, as well. But there’s more to beauty school than hairdressers, barbers, and nail salons.

There are a seemingly endless number of careers in the beauty industry. You might be surprised to find out what you can do in the beauty industry after graduating from TSPA Evansville.

So, if you don’t want to be a traditional hairstylist or barber, and you’re wondering “is beauty school right for me”, read on with us as we look at some of the rarer beauty careers you can look forward to in the job market.

1. Product Developer

Many people who pursue careers in beauty don’t think of product development. But you can use your training to develop the very products you use to style yourself and others. If you have a passion for hair care, makeup, or other cosmetology products, this role might be for you.

Students who pursue this type of career usually have a passion for concealers, creams, and powders. They enjoy the silky texture of high-end cosmetic products. But that’s not always the case.

In certain cases, product developers get into the industry because they are passionate about developing a specific product. One famous name in the beauty industry built a billion-dollar brand, all because she couldn’t find an existing product that worked for her skin. Naturally, she went on to create her own.

You, too, can have the same opportunity if you choose to pursue a career in beauty.

2. Face Painter

Have you seen the men and women painting tigers and butterflies on children’s faces at Disney? You guessed it. That’s one of many bona fide beauty careers.

If you get joy out of being around children and amusement parks, this may be the job for you.

3. Beauty Care Blogger

Do you have a passion for writing and beauty? Then this is the career for you. Yes, we said career.

Many people don’t think about blogging as a career. It’s viewed as more of a hobby. But, if you are knowledgeable in the beauty niche, you can turn your talent for writing into a very lucrative career.

One of the main ways students do this is by turning their blog into a marketing opportunity. Major beauty brands will pay for advertising space on your blog if you have enough followers. You can also use your blog as an opportunity for affiliate marketing.

You can ask any company you support for affiliate links to their products. Some have them and some don’t, so do your research. But, once you get your affiliate link, you can get paid for promoting these products.

Every stick of L.A. Girl lipstick or palette of Huda Beauty products you sell through your blog will earn you some money. If nothing else, it’s a great way to support an expensive makeup habit!

A Bounty of Beauty Careers

The possibilities are endless when it comes to beauty careers! We’re only scratching the surface with this article. If you have something in mind, contact us anytime

We’ll be able to tell you if your niche already exists in the beauty industry or if it’s even possible. We may even be able to tell you if we have a course curriculum for that type of position.

It can’t hurt to ask! We’re here to do whatever we can to help you along your journey.

Hair Goals: Importance of a Hair Consult

One of the first things you need to learn as a hairstylist is how to conduct a great hair consultation.

When a client comes for a cosmetology salon visit, the first fifteen minutes are for getting to know them and understanding as much as possible about their hair and their goals.

Below we’ve outlined several types of questions to ask to get to know your client. You’ll be able to build rapport and encourage them along the way with these helpful questions!

The Importance of Getting to Know Your Client

When you have a beauty consult with a new client, you can learn their hair expectations. You’ll find out what the client likes about their hair and what they don’t like. Frame it in the form of a casual question, like this:

  • What’s your favorite thing about your hair?
  • What are your hair goals?
  • If you could change one thing about your hair, what would it be?

Through no-pressure questions like these, you’ll learn vital information about your client and their needs. Being friendly and approachable is the best way to ensure a good consult.

Without an informative beauty consultation, you won’t be able to prescribe the right products or effectively cut, color, and style their hair. If you want satisfied clients, you have to get to know them first. It’s the only way you’ll be successful.

What Does Beauty Consultant Mean?

As a beauty consultant, you’re on a mission. You need to put your clients at ease and encourage them when they feel vulnerable in their hair journey. You’re like a coach, helping them achieve their goals.

During your beauty consultation, you’ll ask questions like:

  • How do you like to wear your hair?
  • How do you part it?
  • What products do you like to use?
  • Do you spend a lot of time in chlorine or in the sun?

Keep in mind you can meet with your clients online via Zoom if they’re more comfortable. Virtual consultations aren’t just for Covid times.

They usually only take about 15 minutes. Because it’s so short, a virtual consultation is a great way to set up for an in-person appointment. You can meet with your clients at home before they make the trip to the salon.

Questions to Ask at a Hair Consultation

Asking the questions above can help you get started with your consultation. Here are some more hair consultation questions to ask:

  • When was the last time you got your hair colored?
  • How often and what type of products do you use?
  • Do you use heat on your hair?
  • Do you have any skin sensitivities?

Once you know the answers to these questions, you can prescribe products that can help your client. Remember you’re not a salesperson. You’re actually holding the answer to a lot of their hair woes, and you’re giving them the opportunity to solve them.

Taking the Time

Having an effective consultation means taking the time to understand your client and encourage them. You’ll conduct your hair consultation and then be able to provide for their needs and prescribe the right products.

If you haven’t already joined our program and it sounds right for you, apply today to get started!

Where Are They Today: Jake Kissel’s Cosmetology Career

Learn Where Jake Kissel’s Curiosity About The World Of Cosmetology Has Taken Him, What Ignited Him, What He Is Doing In The World Of Cosmetology Today, What Opened His Eye Up To TSPA Evansville Cosmetology School & How He Overcame People Deterring His Decision. Get Ready To Get Inspired

Jake Kissel grew up next door to me along with his 3 brothers. When we were in the planning stages of the Academy, Jake was really interested in what we were doing and started asking my son, what is a licensed cosmetologist, and the next thing I knew, Jake was the first student to sign an enrollment agreement for TSPA Evansville. Jake started in our first class on July 9, 2007. As a student, Jake was very committed to graduating at the top of his class and took his learning very serious. Jake had all the obstacles that most students and new graduates have with financial being right at the top. While attending TSPA, Jake worked a part time job, sold his paintings on the side and saved his money with a purpose. I still remember how excited he was when he was able to buy his first brand new car on his own merit about 2 years after graduating. Jake worked hard and has continued to work hard and never let anything get in the way of his passion and dreams.  What really stands out for me now is Jake’s love of sharing his gifts and talent with others through teaching and mentoring. It’s been a great pleasure to watch Jake Kissel grow as a salon professional and as a person of influence.

Robin Halter

~Why did you choose the beauty industry?

I was in a way oblivious to the beauty industry at this point in my life. It was during my gap year from high school that I had to find a career choice that spoke to me. I knew college wasn’t the best fit for me. With my creative background in the arts, I knew I needed something to fuel my creative side. My mentor, Robin Halter, came to me and shared a bit about The Salon Professional Academy/Evansville. I was intrigued by this idea and it sparked a new flame inside me. I signed up shortly after our chat. So as a big picture, the beauty industry chose me.

~How has your decision to attend TSPA influenced your career?

The Salon Professional Academy helped me to become who I am today. It was the birth place of the career of my dreams. The Academy showed me how I can become the best authentic version of myself. I was able to graduate knowing my foundational skills as well as advanced current real world techniques.

~What have you experienced as a licensed cosmetologist?

Wow, so much has happened since graduation. So here are some of the hi-lights.

  • Hair and Makeup for movie title, Daylight (filmed in Evansville, IN).
  • 3 years at Salon WOW (Evansville, IN)
  • 7 years at current salon, Elements of Style Salon and Spa (Eldersburg, MD just west of Baltimore)
  • Becoming A Pure Artist 2012 (Pureology)
  • Redken Color Certification
  • Working alongside with many industry greats like Chris Baran and Ruth Roche

  • Worked at Richmond hair show selling products on show floor,  presenting on mini stage, and doing behind the scenes hair for Pureology.
  • Worked at the Jerry Garcia Foundation Concert and had the opportunity to do hair for Peter Frampton, Grace Potter, Eric Church and Allie Kral.
  • Attended the London Redken Symposium 2014
  • Attended the Las Vegas Redken Symposium 2015 working show floor and behind the scenes hair for the event

  • Featured on Michel Cole’s FB Live January 2018
  • Motivational Speaker at Cosmetology Schools
  • Will be working behind the scenes at New York Fashion Week-February 2018

~How has the  beauty industry impacted your life?

I wouldn’t be in the position I am today, if I hadn’t made the decision to become a student at TSPA Evansville I have been able to touch the lives of thousands of guest working behind the chair. Sometimes all anyone needs is someone to talk to and have them listen. I love bringing joy to my guests with my personality and skill.

I was told by managers at prior jobs, by family and friends that this industry couldn’t offer me much money or opportunity. I have always had a strong will and I pushed myself to prove the haters wrong. I’m happy to say that I have reached a 6 figure income.  This is not to brag but to shed light on the earning potential that is available if you put in the hard work.

Another huge impact in my life is my ability to travel the world, which seemed out of reach in my life before. Learn better, Earn better, Live better is the Redken mantra. This mantra has helped me be able to grow and focus my goals towards something and achieve them. Anything is possible when you have a road map to a goal.

~What advice would you give to someone thinking about attending school to become a cosmetologist, esthetician, nail tech, etc?

If you truly want to make an impact in your community and even the world then this is for you. We all hold the greatness within us to become what we want in life. The biggest piece of advice I can give; You drive your own car and no one else. You may have people in your life that may try to detour you from this career, but you need to listen to what your heart is telling you. There are so many opportunities within this great industry and we are waiting for you to show up.
