The Interview: What to Ask

It’s impressive that over 3.2 million high school students graduated in 2020 in the US!

Post-graduation can often feel like an overwhelming time in a person’s life, especially if you’re unsure what to do next. One of the most promising careers involves working as a cosmetologist or manicurist at a salon, for instance.

Are you wondering how to nail the best interview? The good news is that you can turn the interview around in many ways to work in your favor. Get the best tips on how to interview the interviewer.

Ease Into Asking Your Interview Questions

If you want some interviewing tips, then first, you must prepare yourself to answer the questions that are put to you. Anyone who starts the interview by asking a significant amount of questions could come off as overbearing.

Instead, it’s essential to ease into interviewing the interviewer after you’ve answered at least a portion of their major questions. However, they may ask you at the beginning if you have any questions, and you should tell them you do. Then, out of consideration for them, you can ask if they’d like to hear them all now or later in the interview.

Ask the Right Questions

Are you still wondering how to get a job? The last thing you should do is ask questions that can be quickly answered by browsing the salon’s website, for instance. Instead, you should spend some time reviewing their website and social media.

You can get answers to some of your questions that way. Looking over the spa’s official pages may even help you come up with new and more in-depth questions.

The following are some examples of the more important questions you should ask:

  • What’s the growth prospect of this position?
  • How would you describe your management style?
  • What is a normal day working here like?
  • What past successes of this business are you most proud of?
  • What would you most like to improve about this business?

By asking these questions, you’ll demonstrate your passion and commitment. From there, landing the right job for you will be a surefire thing.

Remember that you’ll already be licensed, so you don’t need to worry about demonstrating your skills in person for this post-graduation job. That would be redundant, after all.

Now You Know How to Interview the Interviewer

Now that you’ve learned how to interview the interviewer, you can feel much more confident. Remember to practice these strategies and ask every question you’d like an answer to.

Makeup Artist Careers: The Industry Shift

Did you know that the mean annual wage for makeup artists in 2021 was more than $120,000? With a number like that, this is a career that you should consider if you work in the beauty industry. These professionals are employed in the entertainment industry, typically working in the film or theater industry, although other makeup artistry career options are available. Like all high-paying careers, there are requirements.

Makeup Artistry Career Options

One of the careers makeup artists are employed in is entertainment, with the most obvious being the film industry in Hollywood. As this is the most prestigious market, it is also the hardest to break into. The next major employers are live theater companies, such as the ones found in New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles

New Opportunities for Career-Minded Makeup Artists

While not as well-paying as Hollywood or major theaters, makeup artists can find work with local television and production companies. These jobs are an opportunity to build your resume and gain access to higher-paying work.

Makeup Artist Education

To provide any type of makeup application, many states require that you have an active esthetician license. The curriculum of these programs varies by the requirements of the state that they are located. However, common topics of study include:

  • Ethics
  • Sanitation
  • Skincare
  • Hair care
  • Makeup application
  • Nail care

Some cosmetology programs offer areas of concentration and makeup, or a related field could be offered. If your program offers electives, you should use these to get additional makeup courses.

Makeup Artist Requirements

Finishing cosmetology school may not be the only requirement for being a makeup artist. The next hurdle to pass is meeting the training hour requirements. These vary significantly by state, as some require just a few hundred while others require 1,000.

Some states waive the training hours requirement if you participate in an apprenticeship program. Through these programs, you train and gain experience under a practicing professional.

In most states, passing the National-Interstate Council of State Boards of Cosmetology exam is necessary. This exam comes in two parts, a written section where you answer questions and a practical exam that is hands-on.

Other Skills

Besides having the education and licensure requirements, there are other skills that are helpful to becoming a successful makeup artist. Having good interpersonal skills and making the right contacts is just as essential as being highly skilled. If you can’t afford a marketing company, you’ll need to know how to market yourself to get noticed, especially through social media.

Are You Ready for a Career as a Makeup Artist?

Now that you know about what makeup artistry career options are offered, what are you waiting for?
